Fredericksburg Cyclists Club member Joe Gagliardi is supporting National Bike Travel Weekend 2-4 June 2017, by offering club members an opportunity to camp and bike from the Spotsylvania County Izaak Walton League facility (limited to 25 participants).  There is no charge for camping, but the Izaak Walton league does not allow alcohol and require all campers to remove their own trash.

Below is Joe's message to you.  If interested, please contact him at jgagliar@umw.edu

National Bike Travel weekend is 02-04 Jun 17 and I want to do something to support it.  Info on this national event is at

I have gotten permission to have a Bike Campers weekend at the local Izaak Walton League (IWL).  There is primitive camping available at the IWL (potable water and a port-a-potty, bring your own TP) and we have use of the main pavilion.

The location of IWL is at:

12400 Herndon Road , Spotsylvania, Virginia 22553

Directions to IWLA.pdf

This is a semi organized, self-contained event and is limited to 25 camper-bikers.  I plan on setting up camp on Friday evening and man the gate to check in camping guests on Saturday from Noon to 6 pm.  (Times can vary to suit participants)  I will be required to stay at IWL as long as I have guests on the property, so I will not be leading any bike rides, but FCC will allow us to run an organized club ride (with sign-in sheet) provided a ride leader is available.

Registered participants (guests) are welcome to bike in from home, self-contained, for the weekend of camping.  Or, they can arrive in a car with camping gear, food and their bikes and use IWL as a base camp to ride the back roads.  (Wilderness Battlefield exhibit and Chancellorsville Battlefield visitor center are within easy biking distance.)

So is this a ride or a social event?  Both, it is a (free) weekend of camping and biking away from home complete with a campfire (designated pit) by the lake.

Please contact me to reserve your spot.  Call or email if you have any questions

Joe
